Dear Councillor

I was dismayed to learn that West Sussex County Council voted against the inclusion of a Humanist representative onto the SACRE. They voted on your behalf. Were you consulted? More details can be found at www.MidSussexFreethinkers.org.uk.

A Humanist representative would represent the views and interests of the non-religious residents of West Sussex.

The last census showed that 17% of West Sussex residents are non-relgious, that's higher than the national average and more than ten times the number of Buddhists, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs combined. A recent MORI poll showed that 36% of people in the UK share the views of Humanists. Another poll showed that 65% of 12 to 19 year olds are either atheist or agnostic.

The many non-religious residents of West Sussex are being failed by the system. All children have the right to learn that there are good alternatives to religious beliefs. Children in Primary schools are not taught this at all. Some Secondary schools have a unit of teaching, e.g. religion and science; not exactly a broad and balanced curriculum that spans up to 14 years of RE. And poor preparation for the real world.

Approximately 75 SACREs in the UK have a Humanist representative. Why not West Sussex?

Please express your support for a Humanist reprsentative on West Sussex SACRE.

Thank you
